Twee paradijsvogels van Roos Holleman

Paradijsvogels

Roos Holleman

Holleman’s drawings fit into a long tradition of artist-researchers, such as Maria Sibylla Merian, Frans Post, the Bauer brothers and, more recently, Erik Andriesse.

Roos Holleman creates lifelike pastel drawings of birds and moths, among other subjects. A series of birds of paradise is currently on display at Castellum Aquae in Bloemendaal.

Together with Alexander Reeuwijk, she travelled to New Guinea to study these birds, following in the footsteps of the English explorer Wallace. Reeuwijk wrote a book about this and Holleman was given permission to copy Wallace’s birds of paradise in an English museum. This is remarkable, as not many artists are given direct access to a museum collection. The Natural History Museum in Rotterdam has also expressed interest and she will have a solo exhibition there in 2020.
